2013 Winter CSA Now-April 16th

Registration for our 2013 Winter CSA  is now open! What’s better than getting a box of organic and local veggies once a week throughout the winter and spring months?

Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the best produce that Santa Cruz has to offer. We offer two share sizes: family and individual. An individual share comes out to $15/week and a family share comes out to $25/week. More detailed information can be found under the CSA tab.

We currently have 7 pick up sites through out the county. Please visit the CSA tab for a listing of sites. *Please note that there is a new location for the Scotts Valley site. We are also hoping to start a Ben Lomond pick up site. If you are interested in BL please give us a call before registering. We are very excited to be able to offer our CSA to more folks throughout the county!

If you are interested in signing up for our 2013 Winter season, please visit our registration site.  Even though the season has already started, you may still sign up. The price will be pro-rated for the weeks remaining in the season. If you have any questions please give us a call and we would be happy to help, 426-1075.

If you are interested in being a site host at a new location, please call our office and we will let you know what we are looking for. Thank you!

Notes From Jeff

  • June 4, 2013

Long days and short nights have arrived. To say that there still aren’t enough hours in the day seems ironic, but it’s true.  It’s a full time job keeping everything watered and weeded on top of harvesting, packing and delivering an increasing amount of crops. We are happy that most of the crops are looking nice and healthy thus far.  The tomato and pepper plants had a noticeable growth spurt due to our last little warm spell so that makes us happy too.

Our dry farmed tomatoes are reaching their roots down deep to find the moisture and minerals hiding far underground. They are also vining out their branches and setting ping pong ball sized fruit that we will all get to enjoy soon enough. We aren’t allowing the peppers to start fruiting quite yet because we want to encourage more growth of the branches and leaves. To do so, we pull off the first pepper that forms in the center of each plant which then allows the energy to go to the branches. Doing so also prevents splitting down the middle of the plant once the pepper matures and gets heavy.

We are already planting a second generation of crops in some areas that have already produced a crop that has come and gone.  Future crops are either being seeded or transplanted as we roll through the successive rotations that keep our fields full all the way until December.

Different plant families and groups have to be rotated to avoid disease, pest issues and soil depletion.  Luckily we have a wide variety of crops to choose from so planning where to put what isn’t too hard. We are looking forward to more summer abundance and diversity and it sure is on its’ way! Viva Basiltopia!… Read the rest
